The polyacrylamides (PAM) are used in sprinkler irrigation to prevent/reduce runoff/runon problems and ponding effects on stand establishment & irrigation uniformity. Large anionic polyacrylamide molecules are used for erosion control mainly for environmental and safety considerations. In erosion polyacrylamides, the PAM homopolymer is copolymerized. Some of the spliced chain segments replace PAM amide functional groups with groups containing sodium ions/protons. They freely dissociate in water, providing negative charge sites. The PAM formulations for irrigated agriculture are water soluble anionic polymers with typical molecular weights of 12 to 15 mg mole-1. These PAMs are off the shelf industrial flocculent polymers used extensively to accelerate separation of solids from aqueous suspensions in sewage sludge dewatering, mining, paper manufacture, clarification of refined sugar & fruit juices and as a thickening agent in animal feed preparations.
